Cliff Hewett – piano teacher and “eMusicTutor”

1

Cliff lives in Kippen and is the “local” piano teacher, teaching all ages locally, and over the internet for more remote students.

He takes an unusual approach, stemming from his own experience when learning…

My Mum thought that piano lessons would be good for the young me. I disagreed as I would rather have played football, rugby or just about anything else.  I grudgingly continued for a few years until I went to University (or Mum lost her bayonet, I forget which.)

One day at University I headed to the student bar, which was on my right.  But then I heard great ragtime piano music coming from my left.  A dilemma ensued but eventually I chose to turn left and seek out the music, which turned out to be a friend of mine playing the student union piano.  I listened in amazement – it had simply never occurred to me that playing the piano could be fun.  In my head, a light bulb had been switched on and I quickly learnt ragtime, boogie woogie styles and, somehow, the variety made the classical pieces I already knew more enjoyable as well.

Subsequently the piano ended up being a very important part of my life, from duetting with a very young Jools Holland to playing in (small) interesting venues around the world…with many a story to be told!

Now that I teach piano, I try to give people short cuts to what took me a long time to work out: learn an interesting variety of styles early on, learn how to play “by ear” as well as by reading music – and I have found the simple fact that students are much more likely to practice and improve their piano technique if they are enjoying themselves at the same time!  (And it’s fun for the piano teacher too…)”

Cliff is also the founding member of the popular local band “The Dodgy Characters” and runs Beech Cottage B&B with his family.

Brian ReynoldsBorn in 1971, Brian Reynolds grew up in Kilsyth, and started his career as an apprentice carpenter in Kirkintilloch in the late 80’s.  He went on to become an all-round carpenter, and in 1991 spent three years working on the Channel Tunnel project.  Ten years later Brian and his brother-in-law, Brendan Murphy, established Preservation Windows.  This has developed into one of Scotland’s leading manufacturing companies producing sash and case windows, for residential, and commercial projects.  In 2014 Brian set down his roots in Kippen with his new young family seeking the healthier lifestyle that the village has to offer. Keen to continue with his passion for traditional carpentry, Brian set up his own company Brian Reynolds Carpentry in 2017 and offers a comprehensive range of bespoke services to those who share his enthusiasm. Clients can commission Brian in a project management capacity, as well as calling upon his outstanding craftsmanship and design skills to produce such items as timber doors, windows, kitchens and floors. Brian looks forward to discussing with you, any projects you may have.

Special Feature

Flanders Moss NNR

2 Bogs, a swamp and some islands.

The Scottish Natural Heritage Stirling National Nature Reserve team manages 3 NNRs across central Scotland and we are quite often asked what do you actually do? What does managing nature reserves actually entail? Well, now you can find out.

We have just started a new blog called “2 bogs, a swamp and some islands” after the types of reserves that we work on. These sites are Flanders Moss, which you will all know, plus another bog site called Blawhorn Moss near to Bathgate, and the Loch Lomond NNR which is swampy land around the Endrick Mouth, part of Loch Lomond, plus 5 islands on the loch itself. Flanders Moss is the biggest of the sites and the most visited, so there will be more posts about it than the other reserves. All these sites are very difficult to see beyond the boardwalks and paths so the blog will give you the chance to see the distant corners of these special reserves without getting your feet wet.

We aim to update the blog 2-3 times a week and the posts will tell of what wildlife we are seeing on the reserves, what work we are doing and whom we are meeting on the sites.

So, if you are keen to find out more about these special nature reserves then, have a look, the web address is below:

https://2bogsaswampandsomeislands.wordpress.com/

For those on Facebook you can also follow what is happening on NNRs across Scotland with the Facebook page Scotland’s National Nature Reserves. All our blog posts will also feature here.

Flanders Moss Improvements

My email inbox has been steadily filling with complaints about the state of the access track to Flanders. I can only apologise that it is so rough at the moment. It is disappointing that in the last 2 years we have spent quite a bit of money on it, to no long term improvement. So all I can say is that we are busy applying for more money to re-profile the track and get an improved surface that lasts much longer, but this work may take a little while to come to fruition so, please bear with us.

More positive news is that we hope to improve the path and boardwalk over the winter to give a drier path. The wettest part of the path will be replaced with a new section of boardwalk, the flooded areas of boardwalk will be raised and the rest of the path will be resurfaced. So the hope is that by next spring we will have a much improved surface all the way around.

In the car park, the wildflower meadow has had a good summer. It has now had its annual haircut and there will be another 400 wildflower plugs planted soon which will help to make the meadow a colourful and wildlife-rich welcome to the reserve.

If you would like more information about Flanders Moss NNR you can find it on the NNR Scotland website (www.nnr-scotland.org.uk) or contact me, David Pickett on david.pickett@snh.gov.uk.

Clubs

Kippen Bridge Club

Kippen Bridge Club held its first tournament over two days in September.    Four pairs came out from the St Andrew Bridge club in Glasgow.   We had a very social supper at the Inn at Kippen and then played Bridge for 3 hours.   Kippen managed to take its share of the prizes. Surprisingly, the ‘Weegies’ appeared not have discovered the joys of alcohol and Bridge simultaneously – but in true spirit they joined the locals.

On the following morning we adjoined to the Cross Keys for morning coffee and another two hours of Bridge, followed by lunch.

Apparently, despite the Bridge and Kippen, there is now queue of folk fancying a Bridge trip to Kippen, whilst we are contemplating the Bridge & Curry night out in Glasgow.

The club still meets every Thursday in the Cross Keys.

KTC is a small, friendly and relaxed club with over 100 members. Roughly half of our members are juniors and we actively encourage juniors to join our club.

Coaching

We’re underway with our Autumn block and it’s great to see so many coming down to coaching, with just over 40 players coming so far! Our Autumn block runs on Friday nights and Saturdays and more info on this can be found on our website: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/KippenTennisClub

Kippen held their annual Club Champs Finals day on Sunday, with Men’s Doubles, Singles and Mixed Doubles Finals all taking place.

The first match up saw Calum Warwick and Fergus Craig defeat John Wartig and Jeremy Pemberton-Piggot in a closely contested final. John and Jeremy took the first set 6-4, and Calum and Fergus battled back to win in a tight 3 sets.

Next up was the Mixed Doubles final, with Chris Jewell partnered with talented junior Sarah Gibb playing John Wartig and Karen Dekker. Chris and Sarah played a wonderful match, and were ultimately too good on the day, winning in straight sets.

Finally, Fergus Craig played Calum Warwick in the Men’s Singles. Fergus played some fantastic tennis to win the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and to take the title for the third year running. All in all, it was a hugely successful day, with a great turnout coming down to watch and support and to enjoy the tennis (or maybe just the BBQ and drinks…!)

If anyone is interested in joining the club, you can visit our website to find out more information, or drop us an email at: kippentennisclub@googlemail.com

Hope to see some of you at the courts soon!

Clubs

Kippen FC

Kippen FC has just completed its best season for a number of years, earning a total of 17 points in the Forth and Endrick league — our highest point total for some time.

We competed in the cup competitions during the season, and managed to make it to the semi-final of the Cameron Cup for the first time in 15 years.

All this was achieved with a very young squad of players, who between them managed to score a total of 33 goals.  Callum Buchanan claimed the coveted “Top Goal Scorer” award with 10 goals.  We managed to get a few more experienced players to assist the youngsters, and help us to keep improving.

Overall, it was a better season for the club, and we are looking to keep that improvement going.

A big thank-you to all the villagers who have supported the club by buying and handing in books to the shop.

KIPPEN CURLERS

We started the season in Reading Room to introduce some new curlers to existing members.  Val Saville, an English International curler, gave an amusing account of her career on the ice.

There are 32 playing members in the Club and we look forward to a busy season.

The Opening Bonspiel was won by a clear margin by Mary MacGregor, Gavin Cross, Margaret Armstrong and Skip, Michael Kay.

Kippen Badminton Club

It’s badminton season! The Badminton Club meets from 7.30pm to 9.30pm every Tuesday in the Village Hall, and new members are very welcome. The club is friendly, supportive and welcomes players of all abilities, from those just learning to seasoned professionals (we don’t have any seasoned professionals, but they would be very welcome!!). Whether you are new to the game, or can already play, you will have the chance to develop your skills playing alongside our aficionados of the game. It’s cheap too – £2 for two hours of exercise and a good chat – that’s hard to beat! If you are tempted, just come along one Tuesday evening and have a go!
