Tea On The Train

Last year, I decided to put my images to good use and create a calendar to help raise funds for both my charity I volunteer for (Contact the Elderly) and Strathcarron Hospice.

Using these funds, I was able to treat our Contact the Elderly guests (and volunteer drivers) to an afternoon of “Tea on the Train”.  As it was a Steam Train (Bo’ness & Kinneil) it was only fitting to encourage the group to dress vintage!  However, I don’t need much encouragement to dress for a theme 😉

3The platform staff were very helpful in getting us all aboard, where we were served an abundance of sandwiches and baking.  We enjoyed our tea as the train steamed to the end of the line where we could take in some gorgeous views along the way.

A good time was had by all     and                would            certainly recommend if you are looking for an Afternoon Tea with a difference.

Flower Tubs

To include please

Naomi and Fiona having a rest from planting the flower tubs in early June along with a friendly, inquisitive dog. The tubs are needing a lot of watering with this wonderful warm weather, and the sunshine is bringing them on a treat. The Dekkers have kindly offered to ease the load in watering, which is most welcome.

A great big thank you to The Beavers who raised money to add to our reserves, and, as always, thank you to the villagers who pop their change into the box in McNicolls. We have a healthy balance, but all donations are most welcome.

Sports Achievement Cup 2018

The Sports Achievement Cup, donated by Tom Connelly, is voted for by all the pupils in the School. This year’s winner was Murray Robb, who had demonstrated a high level of skill in Kayaking and has recently been promoted into Division 1, which is a great achievement for his age. Murray was part of a duo alongside Ross Claydon who earned Kippen a remarkable 2nd place in the Scottish Schools Slalom Kayak/Canoe Championships in June.  Murray has also been a member of the School’s football team and a great ambassador for sport in general. A Highly Commended certificate was awarded to Caitlin Bradwell in recognition of her achievement in Cross Country, where she has competed at Stirling, regional and national levels, as well as being an integral part of netball and lacrosse teams in School.

Primary 1/2

Throughout Term 3 Primary 1/2 have been learning about transport and journeys. We have learned how transport has changed throughout time and how people travelled long ago. We have also had a focus on imaginative writing and wrote some wonderful stories about an amazing journey on a rocket bed, inspired by a story we have read called ‘Back to Earth with a Bump’.

The children recently enjoyed a trip to The Riverside Museum (Museum of Transport) and Tall Ship, where they were able to interact with a wide range of exhibits. We walked through old Glasgow streets and visited the shops and Subway. The children were able to climb aboard a train, tram or bus and get a real feel for old public transport. We enjoyed a workshop about how transport is powered.

P1/2 were also lucky enough to have a visit from Kippen resident and Kippen Primary parent, Rev. Mark Davidson. Rev. Davidson is a Naval Chaplain and came to talk to Primary 1/2 about how submarines are powered and operated, and what life is like on board a submarine. The children thoroughly enjoyed his visit and learned a lot.

Journey’s End

Fintry Amateur Dramatic Society (FADS) are putting on a production of the play “Journey’s End” by R.C. Sherriff, on September 26,27,28, and 29th, this year. The performance will take place in “The Playground”, a converted barn, a mile along the Fintry road heading from Killearn, giving the audience “an experience” of life in the trenches.

We hope to widen this experience with an exhibition of stories and memorabilia of the First World War and therefore invite you to contact Jean Woodburn–woodbuje@btinternet.com, or phone 01360 440 745 with ANY information that would be suitable for this task.

My current role is to investigate Wildlife Crimes e.g. Hare Coursing, Poaching, Raptor Persecution, Badgers, Bats etc. Should you require advice please contact me on 101 but to report an ongoing incident, it’s also 101.

The rural communities of Scotland are amongst the safest places in which to live, work or spend time. Much of the crime prevention advice available through Rural Watch Scotland is equally relevant to urban or rural areas, but some issues are unique to rural communities:

Protecting Livestock

Securing Farm Machinery

Theft from fuel tanks

Securing tools and horse tack

Protecting wildlife

Rural Watch Scotland, in partnership with the National Farmers Union of Scotland give relevant and useful advice to the Police.

What does Rural Watch Scotland do?

Alert messages are sent to members informing them of any incidents in their area. It’s free to register and it will ask you how you want to be contacted (text, phone or email).

When an incident is reported to Police on 101 or 999 (for an emergency). An officer will attend the incident and it will be recorded on the Rural Watch Scotland website IMMEDIATELY alerting all members in the area.  Sharing this information allows members to be aware of what is going on and take swift appropriate action making our communities safer.

HMRC & Apple Gift Card Fraud

The fraudsters are using the following contact methods to defraud people:

Voicemails: Fraudsters are leaving victims automated voicemails stating they owe HMRC unpaid taxes. When victims call back on the number provided, they are told that there is a warrant out for their arrest, unless they make payment via iTunes Vouchers.

Spoofed calls: Fraudsters are cold calling victims using a spoofed 0300 200 3300 number and convincing them that they owe unpaid tax to HMRC.

Text messages: Fraudsters are sending text messages requesting victims to urgently call back on the number provided. When victims call back, they are told that there is a case being built against them for an outstanding debt and they must pay immediately.

Fraudsters are using iTunes gift cards to collect money from victims because they can be easily redeemed and sold on. The scammers don’t need the physical card to redeem the value and instead get victims to read out the serial code on the back over the phone to them.

Action Fraud has been working with Apple (http://www.apple.com/uk/shop/gift-cards) and HMRC to warn people about this type of fraud.

How to protect yourself

HMRC will never use text message to inform about a tax rebate or penalty.

HMRC will never ask for any payment in the form of iTunes Vouchers.

HMRC will only post out a P800 tax calculations, in circumstances of under or overpayment of taxes, if you’re employed or get a pension.

Payments using iTunes Vouchers may not be recoverable.

Telephone numbers and text messages can easily be spoofed. You should not trust the number you see on your telephone display as proving the caller is genuinely calling from HMRC.

Be protective of divulging other personal details such as National Insurance number, passport number and bank details over the telephone.

If you receive an unexpected call, whereby the caller requests an advance fee in the form of iTunes gift cards, the call should immediately be terminated.
