The autumn term continued with 1st Stirling Carse Beavers being very excited at “Arnprior Pumpkins”, kindly hosted by Duncan and Rebecca McEwan, and enjoyed the Bonfire Night organised by the Cubs.  Beavers then reflected on the 1st World War and painted stones to mark their respects, taking an active part in leading the Remembrance Service on the 11^th November. After completing the Faith Badge, Beavers learned about global issues, such as how desertification in areas of Madagascar can affect the habitat of indigenous animals like lemurs, plastic pollution damages the food chain in the sea and the difficulty of finding clean water in some areas of the world, making water filters to understand this. Beavers celebrated with a Christmas Party and finished the year by singing Kumbaya at the Christmas Carol Concert. Kippen Tennis Club

Kippen Tennis Club is a friendly, relaxed  local club , which offers players of all standards the opportunity to play on two of the best  all- weather, floodlit  courts in the area.

KTC has a modern clubhouse that includes changing facilities, toilets, showers and a social area.

We currently have over 100 members, half of whom are junior members, and we actively encourage junior players to join our Club.

New members are always welcome, with membership open to families, adults and juniors, and runs from 1st April to 31st March.

For those who are competitive,  we play in the Central Scotland Doubles Leagues and have 3 Men’s teams, 1 Women’s team and junior teams playing across a number of divisions.

The Club runs numerous competitions which are open to all members, and there are also various social events throughout the year, both on and off the court.

We also runs social tennis evenings, which offers new members a good opportunity to meet and get to know other Club members.

The Callendar team ended up as winners of this local Wednesday league and well done to them.

Kippen again played in the Leven Six a Side Tournament in early September and, although winning 2 of our 3 matches, the draw meant we left the tournament without a trophy this year.

The fine weather had the unintended effect of limiting our help to The Gargunnock Sunday team, as many players were taking advantage of predictable dry weather to plan family trips and other pursuits on Sundays.

All in all, another enjoyable season for the players, and the highlight match would be the win over Stirling County where, in a close fought game, we achieved the winning runs on the second last ball of the innings.

The cricket season for 2018 has drawn to a close and it’s time to reflect on the past season for the Kippen team.

The summer was the wished- for warm, dry summer, but that in itself did not mean we were able to avoid having to call off and rearrange matches.

As luck would have it, the annual Kippen vs Gargunnock fixture was not played for a second year running, as the few wet days that did happen this summer coincided with proposed match dates. We will try again in 2019.

In all Kippen played 7 Wednesday games andour fortunes were mixed. We won 2 matches, one against Stirling County and one against the old T of Milngavie but lost the other 5 matches.

1. Outing to Auchterarder on Friday 18th May

15 members played. Par for the course was 69.

1 round Stableford off full Society handicap for the Cauldhame Cup.

Winner – Denis Buchanan – 36 points. (ih 20)

R/U – Pete Turner – 36 points. (ih 17)

3rd – Douglas Laing – 35 points (ih 18 better than Peter Baker-16)

Nearest the pin on the 12^th  hole was won by Denis Buchanan.

Magic 2’s. winner was Mark Seymour £55(£40 carry overs + £15)

Weather – Lovely sunny afternoon.

Course – Excellent condition with greens some good some not so!

2. Outing to Balfron on Wednesday 20th June

18 members played in the afternoon for the Robert Chapman Greensomes Trophies.

Winners – Frank Walker and Rob McQuater — 41 points (inward 6- 15 points)

Runners Up – Denis Buchanan and Douglas Laing – 41 point (inward 6 – 13 points)

Nearest the pin at the 6th hole was won by Denis Buchanan.

Weather – Fine but very windy.

3. Outing to Strathmore on Saturday 21^st July

14 members played morning and afternoon AM round for the Denholm Cup.

Winner – Les Watson – 40 points.

R/U – Rob McQuater – 39 points.

3rd – Carl Olivarius – 37 points.

Nearest the pin for the Jack Hay Cup on the 13th hole was won by Peter Baker.

Magic 2’s no winner.

PM round Greensomes for the Millar’s of Falkirk Goblets.

Winners – Peter Baker and Ian Leith – 46 points.

Rs/U – Carl Olivarius and Colin Dick – 45 points.

Weather – Fine and sunny all day

Course – Although obviously well used, in very good condition particularly the greens.

4. Outing to Balbirnie on Sunday 2^nd September

17 members played in the afternoon, a record in present times, for the Jubilee Cup.

Winner – Les Watson – 38 points.

R/U – Rob McQuater – 34 points. (bih than Ian Leith)

3rd – Ian Leith – 34 points.

Nearest the Pin at the 7^th hole for the Iain Gillies Trophy was won by Peter Baker.

Weather- Overcast but no rain.

Course- Although obviously well used, in good condition, though the greens were variable.

5. The Railton Scott Memorial Trophy was decided being the player with the most points over the two single rounds at Strathmore and Balbirnie

Winner – Les Watson – 78 points.

R/U – Rob McQuater – 72 points.

6. Scott Davidson Memorial Trophy not Completed yet. The finalists are Denis Buchanan and Willie Mills.
7. Crown Hotel Cup- Winner is Rob McQuater with Christie Wilson the runner up.

By the time you read this we will be 3 months into the outdoor bowling season – more than half way through.

We are still hoping for some new members to come along and join us on our fun evening on a Monday night.  Tuition and bowls are offered free to anyone coming along for the first time.

We are fortunate in our village to have such a great facility so even if you have never played before, come along and see what it is all about.

Each Thursday during term time we meet either at the football field or in the village hall for fun football sessions.  We run classes for P1-7 for both boys and girls.  We would love to hear from anyone who would like to join us.

Our summer camp this year will be from the 13^th-17^th August 9.30-11.30 am on the football field.

For a couple of years, a variable group of card players have been learning to play Bridge with good-natured, knowledgeable tuition from Stuart Thomson, using the Benjamin ACOL bidding system. On Saturday 24th March, a group of 16 Kippen card players arrived at the stylish St Andrew Bridge club in Woodlands, Glasgow, to play a tournament – 24 hands of Bridge against a team of 16 Glasgow players. We were coffeed and wined well (and of course, biscuits…). After a tense couple of hours of play, the scores were totted up. Kippen had the most points overall, and the top scorers for the day were Peter Singleton and Dave Bentley of Kippen. Both teams celebrated at Mr Singh’s curry house – a very sociable way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening. Usual Bridge sessions are on Thursdays at the Cross Keys from 8pm and are welcoming and informal (be prepared to use dusty corners of your mind!).

Kippen Cricket Club, for the forthcoming 2018 season, will be continuing our link-up with Gargunnock Cricket Club and will be fielding a joint team on Wednesdays and Sundays throughout the season. Last year finished on a high when the Club was runner- up in the Vale of Leven Sixes Tournament   The final was a close fought affair and Kippen lost only on the last ball bowled. 

We will be playing a full set of fixtures in the West Stirlingshire T20 League on Wednesday evenings, and the Sunday Team will be playing the series of friendly matches with local, and not local, teams. We have a touring side from London on the fixture list for May. 

The Club is always looking for new members and people interested in cricket, young and old, of all genders and playing ability. The Football Club is just about to get the new season started.  We have managed to retain all our players from last year and are expecting a good season. 

We have a new Annual Competition this year.  A cup has been donated to the Club by Jane Wilson, in memory of Bill Wilson, who was Chairman of the Club for many years.  This will be played for between Kippen FC and Thornhill FC on May 22nd at Thornhill Park.

Two Kippen boys turn out for Club Champions

On Sunday 25th March Stirling County U18 Rugby Team won the Youth Cup at Murrayfield for the third year in a row.   A great honour for youngsters to play on the hallowed turf, nice day out for the families and friends too. Two Kippen boys were part of that winning team.  Lachlan Mackay, at prop, played for the team both in 2017 & 2018 and capped his second cup final appearance with a bullish performance and a try. Over the last 2 years Lachlan has been a significant part of a highly successful Stirling County U18 and played both Regional and International Rugby for Scotland.    Kippen’s second son was Keir Singleton, who played U16 Rugby for Scotland last year, but is in his first year with U18s.  Keir came off the bench onto the left wing with 5 minutes to go and much to prove, making a break up the centre of the field, resulting in Stirling’s final try, to seal a comfortable victory 29-5.

Needless to say there were some serious celebrations to follow!
