Updates from local clubs in Kippen.
We had some interesting meetings this term, ranging from a slide show and talk on a trip taken by a couple who enjoy cycling, to a very talented local lady who does lace-making.
Everyone is welcome to come along to our meetings which are advertised in the local shops and the Stirling Observer. They happen on the third Wednesday of every month.

Spring is almost upon us and so is the OPENING of Kippen Bowling Club which will be held in the bowling club on Sunday 22nd April at 1.30 pm for 2 pm. 
For those of you who don’t know about us we are a small friendly club who meet on a Monday night at 7pm during the bowling season. This evening is a fun evening. No need to have played bowls before – just come along and join in the fun. In addition, for those who are interested there are a number of team games and other competitions throughout the season.
In case you don’t know we are situated on the left hand side going down Fore Road about 50 yards down from the entrance to the church.
We are always looking for new members and anyone coming along will be made most welcome. Any information can be obtained from Agnes McLaren whose phone number is below.

This wooden stone was commissioned by Jock Armstrong as a trophy to be played as an annual competition by Kippen Curling Club. The first competition was played in 2005 and was won by Robert Armstrong’s team, with other team members being Jean Chapman, Ken Smith and Marian Watt. Originally the competition was played at an away venue, with several games being played over a weekend. Latterly, it was a day’s outing at Greenacres.
In November this year the competition was played at The Peak Ice Rink in Stirling, with two teams of curling. Skip Margaret Armstrong, and team members John Rennie, Nander Robertson and Naomi Hirst, were the proud winners of the trophy.
Roddy McLeod, who lived at Dun Eaglais, turned the stone from various types of wood. Roddy’s business, before he retired, was Charles Henshaw and Sons Ltd, Iron Founders in Edinburgh. The business creates architectural features for buildings, and when Buchanan Galleries was built in Glasgow they installed the handrails for the gallery, and part of the wooden stone is made from off cuts of the maple handrail. Roddy was always on the lookout for bits of ‘spare’ wood, and the wooden handle is a piece from another commission at the Conrad Restaurant at No 1 Poultry, in London. Another section of the stone comes from echi wood which is a hard wood from Africa, the base being made from walnut, and the stone itself is mahogany. Robert Armstrong made a wooden box to carry this trophy. Altogether, it is a beautiful piece of work. Many residents in Kippen are proud owners of some of Roddy’s pieces.
Probably the wettest season we have ever had and yet with one exception we managed to fulfil all but one result and that was the Scott Davidson Knockout competition which is in the final stage and will be played around April/May 2018 between Carl Olivarius and Roy Johnstone.
First outing was on Friday 2nd June where 14 members played a single Stableford round at Alloa Golf Club for the Cauldhame Cup.

Third outing was on Saturday 22nd July where 12 members played at Kinross Golf Course. In the morning for the Denholm Cup and in the afternoon in pairs for the Millars of Falkirk Goblets, both rounds were Stableford.

The Railton Scott Memorial Trophy was decided at Scotscraig where the player with the most points over the single rounds at both Kinross and Scotscraig won the trophy.

Winter is well and truly here, and our Bowling Club has closed for the season – opening again during the month of April.
We all had a good season with lots of fun. We entertained members from various bowling clubs in the surrounding areas, and we were invited to play at other clubs. Some members represented the club at a number of competitions, although being competitive is not compulsory!!!
Our end of season BBQ was well attended and proved very enjoyable, as was the November dinner and prizegiving.
The AGM will be held in February and precise dates of opening and events will be available shortly thereafter. Updates will be in the next edition of the Wee Vine. In the meantime, if you are thinking what to do in the summer months a warm welcome awaits you at the Bowling Club in Kippen.

Kippen Bridge Club held its first tournament over two days in September. Four pairs came out from the St Andrew Bridge club in Glasgow. We had a very social supper at the Inn at Kippen and then played Bridge for 3 hours. Kippen managed to take its share of the prizes. Surprisingly, the ‘Weegies’ appeared not have discovered the joys of alcohol and Bridge simultaneously – but in true spirit they joined the locals.
On the following morning we adjoined to the Cross Keys for morning coffee and another two hours of Bridge, followed by lunch.
Apparently, despite the Bridge and Kippen, there is now queue of folk fancying a Bridge trip to Kippen, whilst we are contemplating the Bridge & Curry night out in Glasgow.
The club still meets every Thursday in the Cross Keys.

KTC is a small, friendly and relaxed club with over 100 members. Roughly half of our members are juniors and we actively encourage juniors to join our club.
Coaching
We’re underway with our Autumn block and it’s great to see so many coming down to coaching, with just over 40 players coming so far! Our Autumn block runs on Friday nights and Saturdays and more info on this can be found on our website: https://clubspark.lta.org.uk/KippenTennisClub
Kippen held their annual Club Champs Finals day on Sunday, with Men’s Doubles, Singles and Mixed Doubles Finals all taking place.
The first match up saw Calum Warwick and Fergus Craig defeat John Wartig and Jeremy Pemberton-Piggot in a closely contested final. John and Jeremy took the first set 6-4, and Calum and Fergus battled back to win in a tight 3 sets.
Next up was the Mixed Doubles final, with Chris Jewell partnered with talented junior Sarah Gibb playing John Wartig and Karen Dekker. Chris and Sarah played a wonderful match, and were ultimately too good on the day, winning in straight sets.
Finally, Fergus Craig played Calum Warwick in the Men’s Singles. Fergus played some fantastic tennis to win the match in straight sets 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and to take the title for the third year running.All in all, it was a hugely successful day, with a great turnout coming down to watch and support and to enjoy the tennis (or maybe just the BBQ and drinks…!)

Kippen FC has just completed its best season for a number of years, earning a total of 17 points in the Forth and Endrick league — our highest point total for some time.
We competed in the cup competitions during the season, and managed to make it to the semi-final of the Cameron Cup for the first time in 15 years.
All this was achieved with a very young squad of players, who between them managed to score a total of 33 goals. Callum Buchanan claimed the coveted “Top Goal Scorer” award with 10 goals. We managed to get a few more experienced players to assist the youngsters, and help us to keep improving.
Overall, it was a better season for the club, and we are looking to keep that improvement going.
A big thank-you to all the villagers who have supported the club by buying and handing in books to the shop.

Eagle eyed readers of the first edition of the Wee Vine will have noticed that there was an omission in the club’s section of the magazine with no mention of the beautiful game! Given the rich heritage of the game in our village we thought it only right and proper that we give a special focus on our national game and provide readers with all the information they need about our various clubs.
The senior men’s team has been a fixture in the village since 1910 and has over many decades provided a focal point for football in the village. The side traditionally play in the summer Strathendrick League against all the other Stirlingshire village teams. The club has had its ups and downs in recent years and indeed had a period of hibernation a few years back. The side is made up of a core of Kippenites with a few additional players providing a supporting cast when numbers are tight. The club is currently run by Craig McNicholl and will start the next season in May. Anybody wishing to play or support the club in any way should contact Craig on 07545 116792 The new season fixtures and results will now be published in the Wee Vine. Spectators are very welcome and details of fixtures can be found on the “Grapes” Facebook page.
Kippen Junior FC is a club run by a group of parents for all primary school aged children in and around the village. We currently have players from Buchlyvie and Fintry as well as from here in Kippen. Coaching is delivered by qualified coaches who are all PVG checked.
We run football once a week on Thursday evenings and occasional other events such as Summer Camp usually during the last week of summer holidays before the schools go back. The club has also taken kids on outings to see Premiership matches and to see Scotland play at Hampden Park. Football coaching is held at the football field, School multi court or in the village hall depending on the time of year. We are actively looking for committee members to keep the club going. Kippen Sports Development Ltd is a charity that was establish to raise funds and then to maintain the sports field that was bequeathed to the village by The Mitchell Trust. KDSL is a registered charity and works throughout the year to raise funds to help pay for the ongoing maintenance and development of this important community asset. Key contact Paul Goodwin 870910
As part of the drive to ensure schools football is back on the agenda at schools throughout Stirlingshire Kippen Primary school working with Active Stirling has now ensured that there is ongoing football coaching throughout the school year. Training for boys and girls is provided by a qualified pvg checked coach and occurs every Friday afternoon from 3.30-4.30pm.
During the last term before summer holidays the P5-7 boys enter the Small Schools Football and League and cup Tournament. This year they will be defending both trophies that they won in 2016. (see picture of last year’s winning team)
The bowling season in Kippen is well under way. We have had some nice sunny days and evenings for playing and some not so nice!
A few new members have joined us and an invitation is extended to anyone who would like to come along and play with us on a Monday evening. If you have never played before, tuition and help is freely offered. We are a small but friendly club and we would love to see more new faces.
